Farmer's Market Finds

I love walking over the Farmer's Market at lunch. Last time I made the mistake of purchasing too much. I think the trick is to limit yourself to 4-5 things. I love an afternoon coffee pick-me-up and Roos Roast Cold Brew delivered. I wanted some Michigan Blueberries and the sweetest little lady was talking about how proud she was of her berries this year. They are no-spray too so that helped seal the deal. I rounded it out with a mini-baguette & some red pesto to dip it in. As I was leaving the pretty snap-dragons caught my eye and I couldn't resist.

Life Lately

Hi there! We've been busy adjusting to our new normal. We just finishing our 4th week with the little man. We have good days & we have feisty days. I like to call him my little vampire. I want him to stay little and oh so cute for a lot longer than I know he will be, but I'm ready for those needle teeth to go. He'll play very well with us or by himself, then out of no where he wants to suck our blood. Not really, he just wants to play but he wants to play rough. We are still keeping the dog separated for play time, partly because of how rough he can be. He doesn't take no for an answer. Brady's has snapped several times and while I think he is doing us a favor, I don't want to risk an injury (to anyone...human or dog!). I had asked the vet about their relationship and she mentioned to start walking the two together as soon as Remy has his last shots. He gets those shots next Wednesday and I can't wait. We will be able to start taking him to public places and he can start meeting more people and dogs. We are taking a family vacation that following weekend so that should be an interesting adventure too.

Remy goes to the vet

Today Remy made a trip to the vet to meet his new Doctor and to get his second round of shots. Puppies get 3 rounds of shots to help build up immunity against various diseases. Usually they are given at 6 weeks, 9 weeks, & 12 weeks. He was 9 weeks last Sunday so he was due for Round 2. I'm anxious for that last dose so we can start taking him to public places.

Remy took the shot like a champ and even gave a good tail wagging & kisses at the end. The vet commented on how well socialized he has been by his reactions. Proud puppy Momma right here!

Life with Remy & Brady - Back to work

Yesterday was my first day back to work after a week off to adjust to life with the puppy. I had a lot of anxiety leading up to being away from my baby for so long. Thankfully, my wonderful husband works from home and is able to watch him during the day. When Brady was a puppy I was living a mile from work and would go home at lunch to feed him & let him out. He was crated for about 4 hours at a time. With hubby at home, little Remy can have more freedom than that.

It was almost as if Remy knew I was going back to work and he slept in until 5:30 am. Which actually works out perfect. It allows me to get him out, feed him, let him play for a while, then get him back out for potty before I get ready for work and head out the door.

Lately, he's been in this feisty, ferocious stage. I remember thinking that Brady was a challenging puppy but I don't remember all the details. Anyway, Remy is very good but then wants to play really rough. He'll jump from toy to toy playfully attacking them. He's gone after me a few times too which can really hurt if he gets a chance to stick his needle teeth in a toe or hand. He also is into putting EVERYTHING in his mouth. I'll take him outside and I'm constantly pulling things out of his mouth. We've still been working on the "come" command and he'll come running to me. I'll use this as a distraction for him when he's getting into something. It works like a charm right now but I know he'll figure out my trick soon.

Anyway, back to yesterday...He had sunk his teeth into me pretty good in the morning which made leaving for work so much easier. I was almost happy that it happened that way. As soon as I got home in the evening

I made sure to greet Brady before spending about an hour with Remy. It was nice outside and I wanted him to sniff and play and get tired! When he was ready for a little nap I put him in his crate then gave Brady some attention. We played ball until the cottonwood became too annoying. It covered the ball and Brady didn't want to pick up back up. I took him for a longer walk instead.

This morning Remy slept in again until 5:30am. I'm really like the longer sleep pattern. I hope it stays like that for a while. It's really hard to be patient when you are sleep deprived. He started to get a little feisty again this morning and wouldn't go potty. I decided to crate him at that point and get ready for work. Once I was ready to go, I took him outside again with hopes that he would sleep until my husband got up with him.

Tomorrow is the big day to go to the vet.

Remy - Life with a puppy, Week 1

The idea started a while ago to get another dog. Brady, my beloved Brittany, is quickly approaching 9 years. That's 63 in dog years. He's happy & mostly healthy. I say mostly because the poor guy is covered in fatty tumors. He's been checked multiple times by the vet and nothing to be concerned about. I'm sometimes a pessimist and all of this got me thinking about how the old boy is starting to slow down and I don't know how much more time I'll have with my best friend. I wanted him to have a friend that he can enjoy while he still has energy & spunk. I wanted him to help train & influence a wee little one. Then it all fell into place and last Saturday we picked up our new addition.

Meet Remington, aka Remy:

I took a week off of work to help all of us get adjusted. It's been filled with puppy kisses, needle teeth piercings, snapping, snuggles, joy & trying moments. Puppies are a lot of work. I did research and went based off of previous puppy experience and we've been crating him. He needs the sleep & we all need a break periodically.

Brady isn't too sure of him yet. This has been the hardest part for me. On the first day home Brady snapped at Remy and Remy yelped that high horrible yelp several times in a row and took off running away. I know dogs are dogs, but by the reaction I thought that Brady may have really hurt him. I decided to take the being patient approach and now we monitor them closely but we make sure that they are around each other to figure things out.

One of my favorite things is teaching the Remy the "come" command. It's so sweet to see him run towards me and jump into my arms. He's catching on pretty quick. I try to work with him 10-15 minutes a day. I encourage him to sit & wait in his crate before letting out. He's doing fairly well on this too.

On Wednesday he goes to the vet for round #2 of his puppy shots. I'm anxious for him to have all of his shots so we can start taking him more & more places. Even though we have a larger yard, it can be hard getting him exercise & having him learn new places/experiences when we also have to keep him safe from potential illness & disease.

Potty training is going okay too. I've learned from reading not to punish when he has accidents but to praise when he does it right. We crate him often but sometimes when he starts crying (after being quiet for a while), I'll take him out to go potty, then put him back in.

He's sleeping well at night. He's only been waking once, usually between 4-5:30 am to go out to the bathroom. I know in time his little bladder will grow and he'll be able to make it even longer.

Yesterday we met with the puppies. One of these little ones is going to be coming home with us in less than 3 weeks!

This silly pup never ceases to make me smile. On Saturday, the Hubs & I went for a run and took our trusty steed with us. On the way over he stepped into his Papa's running bag. I'm not sure if he didn't like the car ride, or if he was mad that the bag was in "his" spot.
